Summer Short Stories - Witches on Watch
“Eurgh, I’m so boooooooored!” Lavender groaned as she let her head dangle downward over the side of the bed, allowing her long brown locks to tumble downwards and drape across the wooden floorboards below. She raised her legs – clad in dark tights with floral patterning – up to the ceiling where she wriggled her toes to entertain herself, the rest of her outfit consisting of a pair of denim hotpants, a lime green top and matching green choker about her neck. Her mother Heather tutted and raised her eyes to the ceiling from where she was sat cross legged on the floor, her brown eyes fixed on the old-fashioned leather carry bag resting atop a stool in the middle of Heather’s bedroom, located on the top floor of Lady Agatha’s manor. “Look, you don’t have to be here if you don’t want!” Heather scolded her daughter. “No way, I promised Lady Agatha and Tahira that I’d help you keep an eye on things,” Lavender sighed as she bicycle kicked thin air in boredom. She looked across to her

Ding dong ‘Oh god, Rachel keeps getting earlier’ Sara thought, the shock of hearing the doorbell causing her almost smudge her lipstick while applying it, looking at herself in her bedroom mirror. She tutted as she reached for a tissue to clear up the streak. “Be down in a sec!” she yelled from her bedroom, taking a moment to check her mascara was applied and her long brunette locks were perfectly straightened. The mirror also revealed Sara’s bright shiny purple dress, fitting her slim athletic form perfectly with thin spaghetti straps over her bare shoulders, the hem reaching mid-thigh where her legs were clad in sleek dark tights, the outfit completed with a pair of new ankle strap high heels a matching shade of purple to her dress. Sara looked back at herself in the mirror, then cast her eye to the discarded dresses resting on her bed. There was still time to change, after all…this dress…and the tights… …No come on Sara. Stop paying attention to Harriet’s jokes. Of course this
“Ooooooh that’s a gorgeous outfit Freya. You going anywhere nice tonight?” Freya was startled slightly by this bright and bubbly exclamation, having been engrossed in the batch of insurance claims that she’d been processing. She looked up from her computer monitor and moved her gaze to the wall of her work cubicle, where she spied the pretty face of Lexi resting her chin on the corner, eyes fixed on the newcomer’s attire. Freya cleared her throat, looking down at her silk dark green dress with ribbon belt affixed in a bow, worn with nude stockings and dark shiny high heels, her wavy dark brown hair tumbling onto her shoulders. “Er yeah, I kinda have a blind date tonight,” she replied softly. Judging by how Lexi’s eyes widened in delight, Freya partially regretted passing on this information. “No way, that’s super exciting!” Lexi exclaimed, immediately walking around the cubicle wall to reveal the charcoal grey trouser suit she wore with a purple blouse and matching purple flats
Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, until Peggy A. Autumn awoke with her head feeling like it was about to split open… “Oh God not again…” she groaned to herself as she felt the hangover headache pounding even before she opened her eyes. When she opened her eyes, it took the blurring a moment to dissipate, at which point her vision focused on one of her boots, lying discarded on the floor, entangled by a length of glittering red tinsel. Bloody hell…had she fallen out of bed? “Oooowwww,” Peggy groaned as up she rose, right arm tingling from the impact, her head swimming and mouth sour following the aftereffects of the drink she had consumed, the lingering taste of Eggnog on her tongue. She brushed strands of her fringe behind her ear as she rose to her knees. Then she discovered she was in a bedroom she did not recognise. A nice bedroom. Perhaps the poshest bedroom she had ever been in, but an unfamiliar one nonetheless. As Peggy

“Thanks for being chauffeur again!” mum said to Chris as he turned off the ignition. “I would have thought you would have wanted to drink tonight.” “It’s OK, dad said he’d drive us back,” Chris replied as he stepped out of the car, having parked it up on the damp, defrosted grass that formed the overflow car park for the Millers Arms Hotel. He took a moment to examine his hair in the wingmirror, his fringe still deliberately scruffy though his silly, wispy ponytail still intact. He was currently dressed in a smart dark suit with a bright red tie and a white shirt, a pair of light brown suede shoes on his feet. From the opposing door my mum emerged, dressed in an amazing lime green dress with a matching wide brimmed hat on her dirty blonde hair, with white sling back heels worn with nude stockings. Yeah, my family can spruce up very well when they need to...silly ponytails aside... It didn’t take them very long to locate my dad as he wasn’t exactly being conspicuous, pacing in front

Felicity finished applying lipstick in the mirror hanging from the living room wall, before fiddling with the fake blue lily clipped into her straight shoulder length blonde above her left ear. She took a moment to examine her outfit in the mirror, a shimmering light blue dress with lacey shoulder straps, the skirt reaching down to the knees, which she wore a pair of cream stiletto high heels with seamed stockings. She reached for the matching shimmery light blue jacket that would go over the dress hanging from the back of the living room door, which would maintain her professional look even while dressed for a glamorous wedding. “You coming down Abi? Harriet and Kavita will be here soon!” “Just a sec,” came the voice from the top of the staircase. “I want to make sure it’s not too much.” “Well bit late now, you did design your dress yourself, you had plenty of time to change it.” “You know what I mean sis!” Felicity rolled her eyes at herself in the mirror. “Well let’s have a look

The location for the wedding of Louise Simpson and William Maddox was a beautiful hotel called The Millers Arms, deep in the countryside beyond Carrington at a small hamlet called Badgers Crossing. It was obscenely picturesque no matter the time of year, positioned at the bottom of a small valley flanked by woodland on either side. A shallow fast-moving river ran alongside the hotel with an old watermill poised over the water, after which the hotel had been named. An immaculate lawn ran from the river and the (now bare) willow trees, to the impressive red brick hotel with sandstone buttresses and perfectly trimmed ivy covering the stonework like a coat. And the extra bright lights wound about the ivy and illuminated fir trees arranged by the main entrance further gave evidence of what time of year it was. The morning before the wedding the weather was beautiful. The rain from the previous night had passed through, leaving a pale blue sky in its wake with the grass and leaves coated
“Yes, we got ourselves a game.” “That was fast, didn’t realise this game was so popular.” “What do you mean? ‘Snoopers’ has been in the Twitch top five since launch!” “Pretty surprising for a game which doesn’t featuring any shooting.” “Well it does have a pretty awesome hook…who’d you pick this time?” “I went for that Sara Philips this time.” “Oh right, the all-rounder?” “I’ve given her that ‘inspiration’ perk which will provide those around her with extra escape points, which my come in handy. How about you?” “I went for that Becky Carter.” “Doesn’t she have rubbish speed stats?” “Because of the heels, but she’s got amazing stamina…OK we’re in the abandoned mansion map. Our objectives are to find the secret memory box in the attic and hidden deeds in the cellar.” “OK looks like one of our teammates has picked Peggy Autumn, she’s the one who can kick ass right?” “Sure can, and the oth…oh nuts they’ve picked Dawn Meadows.” “Doesn’t she have the ability to charm
